Past Accomplishments

1980 - present - Monitoring statewide policy developments in the criminal justice arena.

2001 - present - Helping community-based corrections programs continue to keep their doors open and provide services during an extended period of budget cuts at the state level.

2007 - present - Advocacy work helped lead to a temporary court- imposed moratorium on the death penalty based on questions about lethal injection.

1995 - present - Participating in the development of the State-County Criminal Justice Partnership Program and continuing to be actively involved in the Durham CJPP program.

1983 - present - Serving as a founding member of the NC Community Sentencing Association and providing statewide policy information to both that network and other community-based corrections programs.

2007 - 2008 - Continuing to advocate for the enactment of the Racial Justice Act by the NC Senate.

2007 - Successfully advocating for passage of the Racial Justice Act by the NC House of Representatives. The Racial Justice Act is currently being considered by the NC Senate.

2003 - NC Senate passes moratorium on the death penalty.

2000 - 2007 - Educating North Carolinians about extensive and pervasive problems in the use of the death penalty and highlighting the need for a moratorium and multiple reforms.

2001 - NC Legislature ends the use of the death penalty for persons with mental retardation.

1991 - 2001 - Educating North Carolinians about the need to exclude persons with mental retardation from the death penalty.

1999 - Educating the media about violence prevention strategies.

1990 - 1995 - Successfully advocating for a sentencing policy that links sentencing policy and resources. Advocated for the full inclusion of Intermediate Sanctions in the NC Sentencing Structure.

1987 - 1997 - Managing the Durham Community Penalties Program, a direct service program preparing comprehensive community sentencing plans for offenders facing prison sentences.

1986 - 1990 - Successfully advocating for a complete review of the NC Sentencing Structure.

1987 - Successfully advocating for repeal of the death penalty for juveniles up to the age of 17. The Courts have since struck down the use of the death penalty for all juveniles. The NC legislation helped pave the way for definitive action by the U.S. Supreme Court.

1980 - 1983 - Initiated and staffed the Citizens' Commission on Alternatives to Incarcation - a statewide group of citizen leaders that made recommendations for key reforms.
